Why I don’t want my kids to look at the camera anymore…
I’m extremely passionate lately about Documentary Family Photography. Every day I am documenting my family’s life in one way or another. I want to do it for your family too! So I’m sharing some images here today of my own family, in the hope it will inspire just one person to allow me to do the same for them. This is my family’s recent ‘camping’ trip, the kids called it camping, but in reality we stayed in a cabin. This whole series of images was shot in only a matter of a few hours.
I guess we must be that crazy family that wants to camp in winter as we have done it twice now. The nights were freezing, and the days were pretty cold compared to what we are used to on the Gold Coast, but really, they weren’t too bad. We were blessed with sunny days and spent our time walking and hanging out at the town’s skate park. The kids were mostly just excited about the bunk bed.
Documentary family photography is very personal. I look at these images and my heart sings because I know I will be able to remember all these little moments forever. The kids too will be able to look back and remember details about their childhood we might otherwise have forgotten.
My style isn’t yet 100% documentary. I know that clients need some posing and direction when having their photo taken. It does help to plan an activity to do together for while I am there, to try and forget about the camera.
My youngest holds my hand lately while he skates, he is still learning to balance. I knew I never wanted to forget the way his hand feels and the way he needs me there, and now I don’t have to.
A camping trip, a picnic at the park, a bonfire in your backyard, whatever your thing is. Let me capture it. Don’t have a thing? Let me visit you at your house and document your home life, I’ll soon show you what your ‘thing’ could be.
I spent years trying to get my kids to look at the camera for that perfect portrait. Now I don’t want them to.
